What is so special about German Shepherds?
Any good dog is absolutely great! However, the German Shepherd dog is often considered one of the most versatile breeds of dog! They perform as service dogs covering all kinds of disabilities, national security, military, law enforcement, explosive and contraband detection, and more.
What questions do you ask your potential buyers?
Here are some general questions that I ask all of my buyers-
Have you ever owned a dog before and have you raised a puppy (by yourself)?
What is your current (and expected) lifestyle?
Realistically, are you physically active already and are you willing to work with a trainer?
Do you own or rent and have you asked permission and checked with your insurance carrier?
Have you assessed the costs of raising a pet?
Do you plan to breed your pet or spay?
Why do you love being a dog breeder?
Being a breeder has been a passion of mine since I sat beside my first mixed-breed dog that had puppies when I was a child and has become my lifelong purpose.
To that end, I have spent over 40 years loving this lifestyle. I have bred and trained and shown dogs AND LOVED my people, who have become like family to me as they have raised and cared for my babies!
I have enhanced my ability to improve upon what I do with my program by creating a well-rounded knowledge base. Level 1 & 11 Animal Control, POST Certified K9 Evaluator, Multiple High in Trial Awards, Alliance of Therapy Dogs Evaluator, AKC CGC Evaluator, Associate Science Degree in Veterinary Technology, Registered Veterinary Technician (with my National Credentials), among other things.
What challenges do you face as a dog breeder?
Finding good people to LOVE my babies!
People have to be willing to be the parent and create the boundaries. Many people are “afraid”. They may feel that if they say “NO!” that their pet will no longer love them. We are more secure in preparing an environment where the rules are consistent, fair and upheld.
A second challenge is knowing that many people think that breeders are adding to the overpopulation of dogs. That is just not true. People that allow their animals to breed indiscriminately are the problem. Their carelessness continues unchecked.
What advice do you have for aspiring breeders?
I highly recommend that you get yourself a mentor (or a dozen!). Surround yourself with successful, knowledgable people that can be there advising you through the ups and downs. You will benefit from having the right people in your life and being associated with them. Keep a notebook of people who recommend you!
